MOSCOW, Idaho— Mikayla Ferenz, one half of the illustrious Splash Sisters, graduates this Saturday from the University of Idaho with her bachelor's degree in mathematics, and will be considered among the Idaho greats as one the most decorated student-athletes in Vandal history.
Â
What does it takes to be considered the greatest of all time, the G.O.A.T.? Maybe it is easier to show rather than tell, that maybe actions speak louder than words. The North Idaho Female Athlete of the Year did just that in her four years as a Vandal on the women's basketball team. Her many accolades she has collected over her four-year career shows how hard work can pay off both on and off the court.
Â
Ferenz, a seven-time Big Sky Player of the Week honoree, will leave a legacy that will be cemented in the Vandal women's basketball record book for years to come. She has tallied 2,466 career points, which is good for the all-time leading scorer title in both Idaho and Big Sky history. Twice, Ferenz managed to score over 700 points in a season by first setting the program record with 742 points in 2017-18, and then broke her own record with 749 points this past season. She averaged at least 22 points per game in both years.
Â
After reviewing her resume you can see why the 2018-19 Big Sky Player of the Year will be sitting with the Vandal greats at the top in Idaho Athletics.
Â
On average, the talented senior guard ended her career shooting a 44.4 percent clip (865-of-1949) from the field and 38.4 percent (415- of-1082) from the three in her four-years. She is one of six to reach over 400 made 3-pointers in NCAA DI women's basketball history, which included on that list is her fellow Splash Sister
Taylor Pierce (472).
Â
While Ferenz may have rewritten the record book on the court, she also made her mark in the classroom achieving the same excellence in her studies. Ferenz was named the 2019 Women's Basketball Division I Academic All-American of the Year selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She is the first Vandal and fist woman in Big Sky history to earn the award in any sport. This award comes after being a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Selection and receiving her second First Team Academic All-America honor.
Â
With graduation coming up this weekend, Ferenz looks to take on her final act and receive her most prized award yet: her college degree.
