McCormick, Sean Action 2019 Practice

First Practice Under the Belt

Saturday marked the first official practice for 35 Vandal newcomers

08/03/2019

MOSCOW, Idaho - Idaho football held its first practice of fall camp Saturday evening, on campus. The Vandals will be in helmets again Sunday, followed by two practices in shells before an off day Wednesday, and the first day of full pads Thursday.

Saturday marked the first official practice for 35 Vandals who have joined the program since the end of the spring semester. Among the newcomers are four transfers from FBS programs. Three now roam Idaho's secondary in Davontae Ginwright (Western Michigan), Christian Nash (Utah State) and Mujeeb Rufai (Boise State), while Kayode Rufai (Boise State) is on the defensive line.

Also joining the defensive line is Noah Elliss, who originally signed out of high school with Mississippi State. Elliss spent the past 12 months going to school at Idaho, improving his academic standing to earn full eligibility for the coming season. He was deemed eligible to participate in practices following the spring semester. He fulfilled all of his requirements to be eligible for competition Friday, after earning an A in his final summer school class.

Idaho welcomed 26 true freshmen to the field Saturday, for their first collegiate practice. A handful of the recent high school graduates are vying for playing time right away. Kiahn Martinez (Denver, Colo.) and Nick Romano (Meridian, Idaho) are making their mark on the running back battle. A number of freshmen are looking to crack a veteran rotation at wide receiver, led by Kaleb Covington (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Sean McCormick (Fallon, Nev.).

The Vandals continue fall camp for the next three weeks, before classes resume Aug. 26. Idaho opens the 2019 campaign Aug. 31, at Penn State. The home opener is Sept. 7, against Central Washington.
