Idaho Hoops Set to Play Utah

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandals travel to Salt Lake City to take on the Utes of Utah on Friday evening. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m. pacific time/7 p.m. mountain time.

SCOUTING THE UTES (3-1): Utah opened its season with a conference win over Washington (76-62), before defeating Idaho State (75-59), and falling to BYU (82-64).

In their most recent game, Utah defeated Utah Valley, 75-67. Four Utes scored in double figures, led by Timmy Allen who scored 19 and also pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

As a team, Utah is scoring 72.5 ppg while allowing 67.5 ppg. Alfonso Plummer leads the squad in scoring, averaging 16.3 ppg, while Allen is just behind, tallying 13.3 ppg. Mikael Jantunen averages 5.3 rpg to lead the team in that category.

SCOUTING THE VANDALS (0-4, 0-2 BSC): DeAndre Robinson leads the Vandals in scoring and rebounding, recording 11.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg. Scott Blakney also averages double figure scoring (11.0 ppg).

LAST TIME OUT: The Vandals fell at CSU Bakersfield, 76-66. Robinson and Ja'Vary Christmas each scored 13 points, with Robinson going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

SERIES HISTORY: Utah leads the all-time series with Idaho, 12-2. The last time the two teams played was November 13, 2009. The Vandals won the game in Salt Lake City, 94-87.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Idaho is in the midst of five consecutive games on the road to begin the season. The last time the Vandals were not at home for five straight games was during the 2013-14 season when they played Portland, North Texas, and Columbia all in Portland, Ore., before playing at Boise State and UC Davis.

GET TO WORK
Transfer DeAndre Robinson has immediately made a difference as a Vandal. He is leading the squad in both scoring (11.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.0 rpg). The junior is shooting 59.3 percent from the field and 64.3 percent from beyond the arc. He is also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

GIMME A DOZEN
Senior Scott Blakney is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game. He scored 12 points in each of the first three games of the season. Blakney has scored in double figures in six of his last eight games going back to last season. Overall, the senior is shooting 55.9 percent from the floor.

PERFECT FROM THE STRIPE
Hunter-Jack Madden is a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line this season. He is one of 30 players in Division I who remain perfect from the charity line. The freshman was seven-for-seven in the Dec. 5 game against Sacramento State.

LATE START
Idaho opened the season on December 3 this year. This is the first time the Vandals began play in the month of December since the 1976-77 season, when they lost to USC on December 1. This is the latest opening game for Idaho since a December 3 win over Long Beach State in 1962.

SIGNED
Two players have signed to join the Vandals next season. RJ Walker is from Decatur, Ill. He is a guard who averaged 17 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.5 spg, and 3.2 apg his junior season. Yusef Salih, from Richmond, Va., averaged 14.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4.1 apg, and 2.3 steals per game in 2019-20. He was named First Team All-Conference.
