Academics Thrives Under Challenging Circumstances

MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho student-athletes posted another record-breaking semester this spring.  The overall department grade-point average was a staggering 3.5, with 12-of-14 teams setting program-highs as well.

The numbers keep getting better.  Despite learning from a distance and the challenges that were thrown at them this semester, 268 student-athletes finished at or above a 3.0 GPA.  Of that group, 124 recorded perfect 4.0's.

"The ability of our student-athletes to adapt to the multitude of changes in both their academic and athletic lives this spring, and still perform at such a high level academically, shows the dedication they have to achieving in the classroom," said Director of Student-Athlete Support Services, Krista Gray.  "The commitment of our coaches to support their student-athletes and our academic support staff through this challenging time was second to none and proves we have some of the best coaches in the country."

Women's cross country led the way with a cumulative GPA of 3.95.  Women's tennis was close in second at 3.92, and women's track and field took third with a 3.88 GPA.  Women's basketball had an incredibly impressive semester as well, and finished at 3.87.  Soccer (3.73) and volleyball (3.69) also finished with program-record GPAs.

All six men's programs set new GPA records this spring.  Men's cross country led the way at 3.68, while men's track and field and men's tennis each finished at 3.59.  Men's golf had all nine student-athletes finish above a 3.0, and finished with a combined average of 3.54.  The football program did better than ever, with 68 student-athletes finishing above a 3.0, and 18 recording perfect 4.0 GPAs.  The program finished with a team GPA of 3.13.  Men's basketball had five perfect 4.0 student-athletes and 10 above a 3.0.

Women's golf (3.63) and swimming and diving (3.60) both continued their consistent, strong performances in the classroom.

Earlier this week the NCAA released the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR), detailing the academic achievement of each program.  The multi-year report includes date from 2015-16 through 2018-19.

In total, four programs finished with multi-year APR scores of 1000.  Men's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf and women's golf all earned NCAA Public Recognition last week.

Eight programs posted perfect scores of 1000 during the 2018-19 year.  Women's soccer, women's swimming and diving, volleyball and men's tennis join the previous list of four.
