Vandals Sweep Southern Utah 3-0; Complete Series Sweep

MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho Volleyball team completed the series sweep over Southern Utah Monday night, winning 3-0. The Vandals (3-1, 2-0) earned their first sweep of the season over Southern Utah (0-3, 0-2) in Memorial Gym in dominant fashion.
 
Kennedy Warren led the Vandals for the fourth consecutive game with 16 kills, tying her career-high, and totaled eight digs while hitting .417 in the match.  Donne'e Janzen totaled 24 assists and Peyten Ely totaled a career-high seven assists.  Becca Owen led the Vandals with 15 digs. Nikki Ball led the Vandals with six total blocks including three solo and three block assists.
 
Avery Housley put the Vandals on the board, 1-0, to begin the game. After falling behind 3-1. A pair of kills from Bea Whitling and Kennedy Warren helped the Vandals to a 6-4 lead. After Southern Utah tied the set up 9-9, the Vandals used a 4-0 run to jump out to a 13-9 lead. A service ace form Alaina Lacey pushed the lead to seven, 19-12. The Thunderbirds added a couple more points, but a 4-0 run at the end, which included three Kennedy Warren kills, clinched the win 25-14.

Idaho picked up right where they left off to begin the second set, sprinting to an early 6-1 lead that included three kills from Warren. The Thunderbirds stormed back with a run of their own to lead 7-6. After trading leads, and with the set tied 18-18, a kill from Warren sparked four straight points, giving Idaho a 22-18 advantage. The run also included back-to-back kills from Whitling. Up 22-20 in the set, Idaho closed out with two kills from Allison Munday, before Warren finished off with the winning kill, 25-20.

The third set was all Vandals from start to finish. Idaho once again jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the set. The opening run included three service aces for Warren, a career high. Up 7-3, a 9-0 run gave Idaho a 16-3 advantage. The run included a pair of kills from Avery Housley and several Thunderbird attacking errors. Warren's 16th kill gave the Vandals set point, 24-8. An attack error by the visitors secured the set win,25-8, to complete the 3-0 sweep.
 
Idaho totaled 42 kills in the match and averaged 14 per set while Southern Utah totaled just 23 in the match. The Vandals posted a .337 hitting percentage, their highest of the season. The Thunderbirds hit just .033. The home side edged Southern Utah in service aces 6-4. The visitors had just five total blocks in the contest compared to 10 for the Vandals.
 
UP NEXT: Idaho will travel to Pocatello, Idaho and take on Idaho State in the Battle of the Domes next week, Saturday, Feb. 6, and Sunday
