MOSCOW, Idaho – After a thrilling win over No. 12 Eastern Washington on Saturday two Vandals have been recognized as ROOT Sports Big Sky Football Players of the Week. Junior linebacker
Tre Walker took home the honors on defense, while senior punter
Cade Coffey earned the award for his special teams efforts.
Walker tied for the team lead with 15 total tackles, into a Vandal-high 10 solo tackles. He also forced a fumble and recorded one of two Vandal sacks on the day. While this is a defensive award, it's worth noting that Walker's impact was not limited to the defensive side of the ball. He also tied for the team lead with 27 rushing yards, coming on just five attempts.
a
Coffey was stellar all day. He was called on to punt seven times and pinned the Eagles inside their own 20 on four occasions. His longest of the day went for 61 yards, and he averaged 50.6 yards per punt. In a close matchup with a top-15 team, field position was crucial, and Coffey was integral in helping to flip the field.
Idaho was locked in a battle with EWU on Saturday. The Eagles jumped out to an early two-score lead but the Vandals settled in to level the score at 14 at the break. EWU once again took a lead, early in the third, but after a
Cutrell Haywood touchdown the Vandals found themselves tied entering the fourth.
Hayden Hatten was the hero in the end, catching a 25-yard touchdown from
Mike Beaudry with 54 seconds to play to earn the win.
Next up for Idaho is UC Davis, who had its first game canceled. Kickoff against the Aggies is set for 12 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome on Saturday, March 6. Tickets remain available, head over to GoVandals.com/Tickets today to secure your seats.
