Box Score CHENEY, Wash. – Idaho came up short on the road at Eastern Washington Saturday afternoon, 3-1. The Vandals dropped to 6-8 on the season and 5-7 in Big Sky play after the weekend split. Idaho took a 1-0 lead to begin the match in a wild, come-from-behind, 31-29 win in the first set. Eastern Washington went on to win the next three sets for the 3-1 match win.
Avery Housley led the Vandals with 15 kills, continuing a big weekend.
Kennedy Warren added 12 kills and 10 digs while Munday chipped in 10 kills.
Alaina Lacey had a team-high and season-high 24 digs. Idaho had just six blocks in the contest, led by
Travel Morris and
Bea Whitling with three each. EWU totaled eight blocks. The Vandals totaled eight service aces in the match, led by three from Warren. Whitling led the squad with a .545 hitting percentage as the Vandals hit .221 overall with 56 kills. The Eagles hit .256 for 59 kills.
Things were close to start in the first set before Eastern Washington took a 10-6 lead following a 5-1 run. The Vandals trailed by as many as five in the set, 15-10 before a kill by
Avery Housley capped an 11-5 run, giving Idaho a 21-20 lead. The Eagles quickly regained the lead but both sides continued to battle down the stretch, trading the next five points. Housley notched a kill tying the score 24-24 before Warren added a kill giving Idaho a 25-24 advantage. EWU fought back, scoring two in a row to lead 26-25. Both sides once again traded points until the Vandals took a 30-29 lead after a
Travel Morris kill. An EWU attack error ended the set, giving Idaho a 31-29 win in set one.
Similar to the first set, EWU jumped out to 10-3 lead to start the second. The Eagles led by as many as eight, 17-9 midway through before the Vandals cut down the lead. Idaho used a 12-6 run to cut the lead to two, 23-21.
Bea Whitling added a kill keeping the Vandals alive 22-24, but a service error ended the set in EWU's favor, 25-22.
Unlike the first two sets, Idaho controlled the lead 7-2 to start following a pair of service aces and three kills. This time it was the Eagles who cut down the lead, tying the match up 7-7 after a 5-0 run.
Delaney Nicoll extended Idaho's lead to two, 12-10, following a kill. Eastern used a 7-3 run to take a 17-15 lead and didn't look back, outscoring Idaho 8-3 the rest of the set, in route to a 25-18 win.
Both sides battled in the early stages of the fourth set, trading points. EWU built a two-point lead, 13-11 after an Idaho attacking error. Donnee Janzen tied the set up 14-14 but the Eagles responded with another 2-0 run, taking a 16-14 lead. Housley responded for the Vandals with back-to-back kills, sparking a 4-0 run to lead 19-16. An EWU attack error increased Idaho's lead to three 22-19. A 4-1 Eagle run tied the set 23-23. Warren gave the Vandals a one-point advantage, 24-23, notching her 12
th kill of the match, but EWU would score the next three points, winning 26-24 in the set and 3-1 overall.
The Vandals return to Moscow for their final series of the season as they will host Northern Colorado on Sunday Mar. 21 at 6 p.m. and Monday Mar. 22
