Vandals Edged By Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Idaho Vandals (2-1) fell, 2-1, to Oregon State (3-0) on Friday afternoon. The Vandals scored first, but the Beavers would score two unanswered in a battle of unbeatens.

The first twenty minutes were a back-and-forth affair with each team having a corner kick. In the 19th minute Maddy Lasher scored on an assist by Hannah Alfaro to give the Vandals a 1-0 lead. Following the goal, the Beavers put the pressure on, and the home side was able to break through in the 31st minute, tying the game on an Amber Jackson goal. The teams would enter the break tied, 1-1.

The Beavers would score the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute when McKenna Martinez beat Avrie Fox for her first goal of the year. Idaho had a pair of good chances in the final minutes of the game. With just over 10 minutes to play, Jadyn Hanks used her speed to burst down the left flank before the OSU defense swarmed her. In the final minute, the ball was crossed in front of the face of the Beaver goal, but the Vandals were unable to pounce on it, and Oregon State would hold on for the 2-1 victory.

The Vandals were outshot by the Beavers, 11-2. Both Idaho shots were on target, including the goal scored by Lasher. Hanks recorded the other shot for the
Vandals. Avrie Fox (2-1) played all 90 minutes, making two saves while allowing her first two goals of the season. Bridgette Skiba (3-0) earned the win for the Beavers, making one save and allowing one goal in 90 minutes.

Idaho scored first for the third consecutive game.

Lasher is the third Vandal to score so far this season, joining Margo Schoesler and Maddie Haas. Lasher scored three goals last season.

JEREMY CLEVENGER QUOTE: "I am very proud of this team today. We came out very strong scoring the first goal. We also created some great chances at the end of the game. I thought we got another great performance from the back line and goalkeeper. This will help us build towards conference."

NEXT UP: The Vandals will return to Moscow to host CSU Bakersfield on Friday, September 3. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome.
