MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho volleyball closed out the opening tournament with a four-set loss to Grand Canyon (3-0). The Vandals (1-2) battled all night against the tournament champs.
The Vandals got up early and maintained throughout in the first. Idaho led 6-3 early and then later used a 9-2 run to balloon the lead to 18-10. GCU chipped away a couple of times, but never got closer than three, as Idaho took the set 25-21.
Delaney Nicoll was exceptional in the opening set. She led the team with five kills and recorded both Vandal aces.
Grand Canyon took control in the second. The Lopes jumped out to an 8-2 advantage and maintained a healthy lead before taking the set 25-10. The Lopes were also impressive in the third, taking the set 25-12.
The fourth set was a battle. GCU started strong, going up 14-8, but a 6-1 run by the Vandals brought them back to within one. Grand Canyon locked in from there, going on a run of its own to take the set, 25-17.
