Moscow, Idaho --Â The Vandals fell in three sets to Portland State (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) at Memorial Gym on Thursday night.
Outside hitters Delaney Nicoll and Allison Munday were present all night on the attack for the Vandals, with the two combining for 21 kills. Travel Morris added energy throughout the match that helped keep Idaho in contention, totaling five kills on a .417 hitting percentage.
The Vandals battled throughout the first set, taking advantage of six service errors by the Vikings. However, the away team came up big defensively to force seven attack errors and a .034 hitting percentage to ultimately finish the set, 25-20.
Idaho came out strong to begin the second set, pressing the Vikings with a 4-0 run to make it a 10-5 Vandal lead. The run was highlighted by two kills from Nicoll and back-to-back service aces from Munday. Portland State answered with four different 3-0 runs that helped give the Vikings a 25-19 victory.
The final set of the night saw another promising start from the Vandals, as they jumped out to a 10-7 advantage. The Vikings would preserve once again behind a 6-0 run that would ultimately help seal the win for the away team.
Idaho issued 35 kills behind six service aces on the night, while Portland State made a stout defensive effort that forced the Vandals to commit 19 attack errors.
