FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Idaho swim and dive dropped a conference meet at Northern Arizona, 110-182, on Friday at the Wall Aquatic Center.
"This is probably the best we have performed here since 2014," Idaho head coach
Mark Sowa said. "The score is not indicative of the competitiveness under some fairly difficult conditions against a very good conference opponent. With rare exceptions, we were in every race and finished the meet with a flourish, winning the IM and taking the final relay down to the last stroke. Moreover, the athletes fed off each other's energy and picked each other up when needed. It is still early and we have a lot of places where we can improve but I like this team and I like where we are headed. This was a nice step."
Kaling Phung delivered an excellent start to conference play with a win in the 100-yard butterfly. She finished in 58.74. Three Vandals followed behind with
Ani Husaby (59.69),
Alexa Teneyck (1:00.15) and
Emma Stahl (1:01.94) placing in second, third and fourth, respectively.
Grace Ruble earned her first Division I win as a Vandal, posting a time of 2:08.99 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Idaho made a clean sweep of the top-three spots in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Senior
Rylie Jones led the charge with teammates
Ella Haskins,
Bethany Rahn and
Sarah Shaffer to finish in 3:34.27.
The Vandals make its return to the UI Swim Center next week for a conference match against Northern Colorado, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.
