Vandal Women's Basketball Plays Cal Wednesday

MOSCOW, Idaho -  Idaho women's basketball hits the road for their second game of the season and the second game of against a Pac-12 team. The Vandals (0-1) face California (1-1) Wednesday. Video of the game will be broadcast on pac-12.com while a radio broadcast can be heard on AM 840 KMAX or on GoVandals.com. 

ABOUT IDAHO:  The Vandals were picked to finish third by the Big Sky Coaches and Beyonce Bea was named to the Big Sky Preseason team. Idaho returns three starters off of last year's team; Bea, Sydney Gandy and Tiana Johnson, who is taking advantage of her covid year to play a fifth season of basketball. The three started the season opener with true freshman Rosa Smith and transfer redshirt freshman Brooke Malone starting in the other two positions. The Vandals welcome in six newcomers, including a pair of transfers in Jenna Kilty (Portland State) and Malone (Idaho State). 

ABOUT CAL: The Golden Bears are 1-1 after an 86-56 win over Cal State Northridge and a 90-79 loss to Ninth-ranked Notre Dame. Cal was picked to finish 11th in the Pac-12 preseason media polls and Jayda Curry, Leilani McIntosh and Evelien Schipholt earned Pac-12 preseason recognition. Curry leads Cal with 16.5 points per game through two games. 

SERIES HISTORY: This is the fourth meeting for the two teams, the previous three were on neutral courts. Cal leads the series 2-1, the lone Vandal win came in 2004 in Hawaii when the Vandals won 82-72. 

BEA AWARE: In three seasons at Idaho, Beyonce Bea has established herself as one of the best players in Vandal history. She moved into the top-10 in career blocked shots and is just 201 points from moving into the Vandal all-time top-10 and 104 rebounds from cracking the top 10.  She has 16-career double doubles with nine of those coming after Jan. 15 last season. She earned third-team All-Big Sky honors as a freshman and back-to-back First Team honors after the last two seasons. She also established a pipeline for her family. Her sister, Skylar, joined the team in 2021-22 and their cousin Jaiden is a freshman on the team this season. 

NEWLEE: Head coach Jon Newlee returns to the bench for his 15th season as a Vandal. He is the winningest coach in Idaho history with 244 victories. He was named the 2018-19 Big Sky Coach of the Year.

NEWCOMERS: True freshman Rosa Smith and redshirt freshman transfer Brooke Malone started the opener for Idaho. Sarah Brans came off the bench to score 11 points and Asha Phillips saw her first minutes on the floor with the Vandals in the loss at Utah.
