GREELEY, Colo. – Margo Schoesler scored a goal from just outside the box with just 13 seconds remaining in the first overtime and Kira Witte recorded her Big Sky record 12th shutout of the season to lift Idaho to a 1-0 win over Montana in the Big Sky Semifinals Saturday.
Two of the best goalkeepers in Big Sky Conference history battled for 109 minutes before a goal was allowed. The Vandals finally broke through with just seconds remaining in the first overtime.
Montana earned a free kick and quickly put it into play, but the kick was misplayed and hit directly to Schoesler around midfield. She found an open lane and drove all the way to 18-yard box. She rocketed the ball past a defender and over the outstretched fingertips of Montana goalkeeper Camellia Xu for the goal.
Idaho allowed just one shot in the second overtime and held on for the shutout win. Witte faced 15 shots in 110 minutes in goal. The Vandal defense kept Montana from getting good looks as she only had to make four saves.
Montana had a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The shutout is Witte's 12th of the season which broke a Big Sky single-season record tie for Witte, XU (2021) and two other players. She is now alone for third on Idaho career shutout record book and will move into a tie for second with one more shutout.
The Vandals face top-seed Northern Arizona in the Big Sky Championship Sunday at 11 a.m. pacific. The Lumberjacks battled to a 1-1 draw with Weber State in the other semifinal, but won a shootout 4-2 to earn the win. The Lumberjacks topped Idaho 1-0 in Flagstaff in the regular season.
