MOSCOW, Idaho – Beyonce Bea made 12 field goals to score 33 points and led the Idaho Vandals to a 91-83 win over Denver Thursday evening in the Vandals home opener at ICCU Arena.
Idaho rode a big first quarter that saw the Vandals outscore Denver 27-7, holding the Pioneers to three made field goals and no three-pointers while Idaho was 10-19 from the field, including 5-11 from the three-point line to build the early lead.
The Vandals extended the lead to 43-19 with back-to-back threes late in the second quarter, but Denver cut the lead to 47-27 at the half.
The Pioneers wouldn't go quietly, Denver was 7-8 from the three-point line in the third quarter while the Vandals were 0-6. Denver cut the Idaho lead all the way down to 60-59 with less than a minute to play in the third quarter, but the Vandals closed the quarter on a 5-0 run over the final 29 seconds to extend the lead back to 65-59.
Idaho extended the lead back to double digits in the middle of the fourth and held the Pios at arms' length as the Vandals held on for the 91-83 win.
The Vandals played clean, giving up just five turnovers on the game while racking up 18 assists on 32 made shots. Sydney Gandy scored 15 and Tiana Johnson added 13 with a team-high seven rebounds to join Bea in double digits.
The Vandals were 32-67 (47.8%) from the field, 10-28 (35.7%) from the three-point line and 17-22 from the free-throw line.
Idaho outscored Denver 38-28 in the paint and grabbed a 19-6 advantage in points off of turnovers.
With her 33 points, Bea is now averaging 23.8 points per game. She has now scored 23 or more points in six games and over 33 or more three times. Tonight's total is the most that a Vandal woman has scored in a game at ICCU arena.
The win moves Idaho to 3-6 on the season with two road games remaining. The Vandals play Grand Canyon on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Phoenix and Utah Valley on Wednesday, Dec 21 at 1 p.m. before beginning Big Sky Conference play at ICCU Arena on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 6 p.m. Montana State.
