Idaho Downs Seattle U and LCSC in Doubleheader

The Vandals went 2-0 in their first home matches of the season

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Idaho men's tennis team went 2-0 on Saturday at the Lewis-Clark State College Tennis Courts to extend its winning streak to three straight match wins. The Vandals (3-4) started the day with a tight 4-3 win over Seattle University before sweeping LCSC, 7-0.

The morning match against the Redhawks saw the Silver and Gold battle back after losing the doubles point to win four matches in singles play to outlast Seattle.

The Redhawks earned victories at all three positions in doubles to take the early 1-0 lead.

In singles, Mario Duron Garza evened the score at 1-1 after capturing a win over Michael Frank in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Francisco Bascon followed with a three-set victory (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) over Julian Worn at No. 1 singles.

Alejandro Salvador Civera picked up the third point at No. 5 singles, defeating Mats Krause in dominant fashion 6-1, 6-2 while Matteo Masala clinched the victory for the Vandals after beating Oliver Hall in straight sets (6-4, 7-6) at the No. 6 position.

The afternoon matchup against LCSC featured sweeps in both doubles and singles competition, including straight-set victories in every singles match to help shut out the Warriors, 7-0.

Vivek Ramesh and Alex Asenov got doubles started with a win at the No. 3 position over LCSC's Austin Swing and Larry Magalasin, 7-6. Duran and Masala clinched the doubles point at No. 2 singles, 6-0, while Bascon and Bruno Casino won 6-3 at the No. 1 position to close out doubles play.

Duran was again efficient with his time at No. 4 singles, pushing the score to 2-0 after defeating Swing 6-3, 6-2.

Newcomer Francisco Gay captured his first individual win as a Vandal, taking a straight-set victory over Magalasin 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Bascon won his match at the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-1 while Casino followed with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles to make the score 5-0.

Ramesh and Asenov completed the sweep over the Warriors, as Ramesh took a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cade Edwards at No. 5 singles while Asenov defeated Matus Rusnak 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.

The Vandals will travel north to Spokane to take on Gonzaga on Feb. 19. The match gets underway at 10 a.m.
