MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandal women's basketball team (5-13, 4-5) stormed past league leader Southern Utah (12-7, 8-2) 82-63 to avenge an early-season loss to the Thunderbirds.
Allison Kirby recorded a near triple-double and
Sydney Gandy scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Vandals in the blowout win.
The tenacity of
Allison Kirby was on full display at ICCU Arena Thursday Night. Kirby scored 12 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, dished out eight dimes, and five steals as she was all over the court all night long.
"She did everything, she was everywhere," head coach
Jon Newlee said. "She came to play, and her effort tonight was outstanding."
Not to be outdone, Gandy led the Vandals with 22 points on 8 o f19 shooting including four made 3-point baskets.
"Syd played excellent tonight," Newlee said.
Five Vandals scored in double figures as Idaho shot 41.8 percent from the field.
Beyonce Bea scored 15 points and seven rebounds on 7 of 12 shooting. Coming off the bench,
Louise Forsyth added 13 points and
Ashlyn Wallace nailed three triples to score 11 points.
"We came out focused and ready to play tonight," Newlee said. "I'm proud of their effort."
The Vandals used giant second and third quarters to blow the game wide open. Idaho held a 22-20 lead after ten minutes of play. Then the offense exploded, making five shots from distance and ten total field goals as the Vandals quickly built a 20-point halftime lead. Kirby jump started the Idaho offense with a sequence midway through the second quarter. She grabbed two offensive rebounds before dishing to
Tiana Johnson who splashed down a three-point shot to bring the Vandal crowd and bench to their feet. It was all the momentum Idaho would need as they would cruise to a 29-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
NOTES
The Vandals forced 20 SUU turnovers.
Bea recorded her 500
th career rebound and is 15 points shy of scoring 1000 career points.
