LA JOLLA, Calif. – Savannah Foster scored on a header in the seventh minute,
Maddy Lasher scored a strike in the 62nd minute and
Kira Witte notched a shutout in her college debut to give Idaho a 2-0 win over UC San Diego in the season opener Thursday.
The Vandals got the scoring going early with a corner kick in the seventh minute.
Alyssa Peters placed the ball perfectly in front of the goal giving Foster a wide-open header which went just over the UCSD goalkeeper's outstretched hands.
The goal kicked off an aggressive first half for Idaho. The Vandals outshot UCSD 11-3 and had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks at the break. The Triton goalkeeper made a handful of tough saves to keep the Tritons at a one-score deficit at the half.
Early in the second half, Idaho and UCSD battled back and forth before Lasher broke away from her defender and beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one to put Idaho up 2-0.
On the defensive side, Witte put up a solid performance in her collegiate debut. She grabbed five saves in seven shots faced.
Idaho notched 17 shots to just seven for UC San Diego. The Vandals tallied eight shots on goal to five for the Tritons. The Vandals ended with nine corner kicks to just two for UCSD.
