MOSCOW, Idaho – Six Vandal legends and one team will have their legacies etched in stone this fall as members of the Vandal Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2022. The newest class includes:
  • Mike Iupati (Football)
  • Haley Janicek (Volleyball)
  • Hannah Kiser (Track & Field/Cross Country)
  • Dwight "Red" Morrison (Men's Basketball)
  • John L. Smith (Football)
  • Barrie Steele (Administrator)
  • 2005 Women's Cross Country
 
The 2022 Vandal Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is set for Nov. 4 at the Best Western Plus University Inn. Tickets are on sale now for $100 and can be purchased online at https://2022VandalHOF.eventbrite.com 
 
The evening will include a steak or Salmon dinner (vegetarian option available), no-host bar, and remarks from all inductees in attendance.
 
The 2022 class was chosen by a selection committee after nominations were solicited from the public. The bylaws and selection standards can be found HERE.
 
The Vandal Athletics Hall of Fame was created in 2007 when the inaugural class of 102 individuals and five teams were inducted over the course of two years. The tradition of inducting high-achieving Vandals has continued as a biennial event. Classes were welcomed in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. A list of previous inductees can be found HERE.
 
Biographical information about coaches and student-athletes in the 2022 class can be found below:
 
Mike Iupati – Football 2006-09
  • The second-highest NFL draft pick in Idaho history. (17th overall)
  • Consensus All-American in 2009.
  • Finalist for the Outland Trophy.
  • Started 32 games in three seasons of playing.
  • Led the Vandals to the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl Championship.
  • First-team All-WAC 2009, Second-Team All-WAC 2008.
  • Played 807 snaps his senior year and did not allow a sack while recording 49 knockdowns and 21 pancake blocks.
  • Played 10 years in the NFL.
  • Named All-Pro twice. (2012 - 1st, 2015 - 2nd)
  • Four-time Pro Bowler.
  • Played in 140 games in the NFL, started in 139.
  • Inducted into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame in 2022.
  • Donated funds for the Vandal Athletics Fueling Center.
 
Haley Janicek – Volleyball 2005-08
  • Four-year starter
  • School record holder:
    • Career kills: 1,775
    • Career double kill matches: 87
    • Single match kills: 36
    • Top ten in six other categories
  • WAC Honors
    • 2005 All-Freshman team
    • 2005, 2006 2nd-team All-Conference
    • 2007,2008 1st-team All-Conference
    • Player of the week, 2005, 2007, 2008
    • 3x Academic All-WAC
  • Following her Vandal career coached at Austin Peay. As an interim head coach led her team to their first conference championship and appearance in the NCAA tournament.
  • American Volleyball Coaches Association top 30 coach under 30.
 
 
Hannah Kiser – Women's Track & Field 2010-14
  • 20x WAC Conference Champion
    • 5k (XC)- Mile, DMR (indoor) - 1500m, 5000m, 10000m (outdoor)
  • Four consecutive team titles in XC (2010-14)
  • Outdoor Track and field team title in 2014
  • In 2014, outdoor champion in the 1500m, 5000m, 10000m champion
  • First person in WAC history to win the "Triple Crown"
  • 2014 WAC Athlete of the year and High Point Award
  • Broke four school records:
    • Indoor mile 4:37.55 in 2013), Indoor 3,000m (9:07.23 in 2012 and 9:04.74 in 2013), and the Outdoor 5,000m (15:44.06 in 2013).
      • Her 3,000m and 5,000m records also set new All-Time WAC Records
  • 2x WAC XC Athlete of the Year
  • 2013 USTFCCCA All-Region and 16th at the NCAA West Regional
  • 2x All-American
    • First-team in the indoor 3000m (5th place) 2013
    • Second-team in the indoor 3000m (13th place) 2012.
  • One of only two women to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Cross Country (2011), Indoor Track and Field (2012, 2013) and Outdoor Track and Field (2011) in Idaho history.
  • 2013 Joe Kearney Award for top WQAC Athlete

Dwight "Red" Morrison – Men's Basketball 1950-54
  • Drafted by the Boston Celtics 14th overall in the 1954 NBA Draft.
  • Played three seasons in the NBA, two for the Celtics, one for the St. Louis Hawks.
  • Averaged 3.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in 155 career NBA games.
  • One of four NBA draft picks in Idaho history.
  • Second on the Idaho all-time single-season rebound list (1953-54 - 333).
  • Third on the Idaho Career Rebound list (791).
  • First-Team All-PCC Northern Division 1953-54.
  • Led the Vandals to three-straight second-place finish in the PCC Northern Division.
  • Teammate with future Vandal coach Don Monson.
  • Had a long career in the FBI after his NBA career.
 
John L. Smith – Football Head Coach 1989-1994
  • Recorded a 53-21 record during his six seasons as head coach at Idaho.
  • Winningest Coach in Vandal football history.
  • Went to the 1-AA playoffs five times during his six seasons.
  • Won two Big Sky titles (1990, 1992).
  • Made a trip to the 1-AA semifinals in 1993.
  • Coaches Scott Linehan, Nick Holt and Paul Petrino were all on his coaching staffs.
  • Went on to be the head coach at Utah State, Louisville, Michigan State and Arkansas.
 
Barrie Steele – Administration 1986-2019
  • He spent over 30 years providing service before self-treatment to the thousands of student-athletes over those years at U of I.
  • Barrie served the athletic healthcare needs of thousands of students, and impacted countless athletic training students and professionals as a leader and mentor.
  • Barrie's impact within the athletic training profession extended far beyond the UI, serving as the Director of the Northwest Athletic Training Association (NWATA) where he was responsible for expanding scholarship opportunities for students, incorporating the NWATA and initiating legal action to protect the profession of athletic training. In addition to his leadership and advocacy at the regional level
  • Barrie served on the National Athletic Training Associations (NATA) Board of Directors, and held numerous involvement positions at the national level, including spots on the Finance Committee, Investment Committee, CUATC and the Secretary/Treasurers Committee.
  • His vast accomplishments over the years did not go unnoticed by his peers having been elected to both the NATA and NWATA Hall of Fame.
 
2005 Vandal Women's Cross Country
  • 2005 WAC Cross Country Champions.
  • Danielle Olson - WAC Champion.
  • Wayne Phipps WAC Coach of the Year.
  • Dominating performance with a team score of 30.
  • The first WAC Championship for the Vandals in any sport.
  • The first of five WAC cross country championships for Idaho, second in WAC history.
