PHOENIX – The Vandal volleyball team (0-6) dropped a pair of matches on the final day at the GCU Invitational, falling to Wyoming (1-4) in three (21-25, 13-25, 14-25) and Santa Clara (3-2) in three sets (14-25, 22-25, 17-25) on Saturday at GCU Arena.
In the opening match against Wyoming, libero
Aine Doty recorded her fourth double-digit digs total in six games with a team-high 14. Freshmen
Taryn Vrieling and
Madison Wilson each recorded two total blocks to lead Idaho.
Vrieling's seven kills led all Vandals while attacker
Taylor Brickey followed with six kills to her credit.
Kate Doorn posted 18 assists to mark her sixth straight game of at least 10 or more assists in a match.
As a team, Idaho recorded 26 kills on a .105 attack percentage. Wyoming totaled 34 kills, 15 aces, 39 digs and seven total blocks to help earn the sweep.
In a loss to Santa Clara, Vrieling was Idaho's leader in kills (10) for the third consecutive match. The freshman from Kennewick, Wash. has now recorded at least 10 kills in four of six matches to begin the season.
Delaney Nicoll and
Olivia Gloeckner pitched in five kills apiece as the Vandals totaled 29 for the match.
Defensively, UI posted 29 digs behind a team-high seven from Doty.
Up Next: The Vandals will travel to Florida for its third tournament of the season, when they compete at the Dolphin Classic, hosted by Jacksonville University. Idaho will open with Florida Atlantic (10 a.m. PT) and Jacksonville (4 p.m. PT) on Friday before finishing out their trip against Tarleton State (8 a.m. PT) Saturday.
