Vandal Volleyball Heads to Jacksonville for Dolphin Classic

MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho volleyball is set for its third non-conference tournament of the season with the Dolphin Classic, hosted by Jacksonville University, Sept. 9-10. The Vandals compete in three matches over two days, starting with Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville on Friday and rounding out their trip Saturday against Tarleton State.

Idaho returns to the court after competing in three matches at the GCU Classic against Grand Canyon, Wyoming and Santa Clara. The Vandals were unsuccessful to find the win column but still garnered solid performances from their true freshmen.
Taryn Vrieling posted 24 kills, 11 digs and four total blocks to earn GCU Invitational All-Tournament Team honors. Vrieling now leads the team in points, kills and total blocks. 

Setter Kate Doorn tallied her sixth consecutive match with double-digit assists over the weekend, totaling 54 in the three matches. The true freshman from Bend, Ore. recorded a personal best 25 assists in front of a record crowd of 7,146 fans versus GCU. 

A number of Vandals appear in the top-10 in terms of statistical leaders in the Big Sky, with defensive specialist Aine Doty ranking 7th in digs (69) with 3.45 per set. Doorn's 101 assists rank her at 9th in the league while Vrieling is rated 10th in points per set with a 3.32 average. 

SCOUTING FLORIDA ATLANTIC
  • Idaho and Florida Atlantic meet for the second time in 21 years on Friday, as the Vandals own a 1-0 record after earning a four-set victory over FAU back in 2001.
  • The Owls carry a 5-1 mark into this weekend's Dolphin Classic, with four sweeps and a three-match win streak to their credit. Last weekend, FAU earned victories over Arkansas Pine Bluff (3-0), Alcorn State (3-0) and Stetson (3-1) to be named Paradise Classic champions. 
  • Three of the Owls' top four hitters return from the 2021 season - Katelynn Robine and Klara Zarnovicka and Lauryn Green. The trio combined for 546 kills, including Robine who carried the second-best mark with 200 kills. FAU also brings back their leader in assists Stephanie Young, who posted 370 assists.

SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE
  • Jacksonville is one of two opponents the Vandals will meet this weekend for the first time in program history. 
  • The Dolphins hold a 2-4 record to begin 2022, including a five-set win over Chattanooga and a sweep over Georgia State last weekend at Jacksonville Invitational. 
  • Entering the weekend, graduate transfer Haley Hart leads the Dolphins with 69 kills and 3.29 kills per set. Setter Rebecca Rocassin has done her part to help set up the attack, posting 198 assists and 9.43 assists per set.
  • Jacksonville welcomes seven newcomers this season, including four transfers and three freshmen. 

SCOUTING TARLETON STATE
  • Idaho and Tarleton State clash for the first time in the two schools' history. 
  • The Texans sit 7-1 with a four-match win streak and three sweeps to start the season. Most recently, Tarleton State posted a mid-week victory over UIW (3-1) on Tuesday after earning wins over Southeastern Louisiana (3-1), Tennessee State (3-0) and Prairie View A&M (3-1) at the Littleton Classic. 
  • Tarleton's offense is led by four attackers that have recorded at least 60 kills - Grayson Schirpik (86), Ailie Hair (69), Breanna McDonough (68) and Megan Burke (60). Hair has been the most efficient hitter in the WAC boasting a .492 hitting percentage. Setters Megan Hodges and Melina Maldonado pace the Texans in assists, as Hodges leads the team with 168 and Maldonado follows with 134.  

UP NEXT: The Vandals round out their non-conference schedule with a trip to Wyoming for three matches before returning home for Big Sky play. Idaho will meet Morehead State, Wyoming and Nicholls State for the two-day tournament (Sept. 16-17).
