Student-Athlete Support Services

Wieczorek, Cruz Named October Student-Athletes of the Month

MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho's student-athletes, Zuzanna Wieczorek and Cruz Flores, have been named the Vandal Academic Services Student-Athletes of the Month supported by P1FCU.

Wieczorek is a freshman on the women's volleyball team earning a major in cybersecurity. The Luban, Poland native serves as a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

"Zuzanna is a cybersecurity major and is currently involved in SAAC," said Stacey Hyde, Academics Coordinator. "She is highly motivated and a great student all around."

Wieczorek credits Idaho for giving her many opportunities as a student-athlete. "Even though I am just a freshman, I can honestly admit that the University of Idaho gives an amazing opportunity to connect being an athlete and a full-time student," said Wieczorek. "The study hall hours and academic advisors help out a lot with organizing my time, which is very important while pursuing a degree and in my case, cybersecurity."

Reflecting on her experience with SAAC, Wieczorek brings a new point of view with her international status. "For me, being a representative on SAAC is a way to learn more about the NCAA and the many needs of all my fellow athletes," said Wieczorek. "As an international student, I believe I can bring a new point of view on some issues, but also gain a lot of valuable experience from other older representatives."

Cruz is a junior on the men's cross country team earning a major in mechanical engineering. The Caldwell, Idaho native boasts a 3.91 cumulative GPA.

"Idaho has greatly prepared me for success in my degree," said Cruz. "The team emphasizes thriving in not only athletics but academics as well. Being surrounded by people who are all working to improve themselves and support each other is very encouraging to me and makes the process more enjoyable.

Majoring in mechanical engineering is no easy feat. Cruz credits his cohorts and teachers for helping him along the way. "I've spoken with students that are farther ahead in the degree than me as a way to gain insight on how I need to approach certain classes and ways I can succeed in those classes," said Cruz. "Additionally, the Engineering department offers many mentors who are always willing to help. My academic advisor has also been a huge help to me in terms of planning my schedule. Because of the highly structured credit load that comes with my degree, making my class schedule fit with my practice schedule is a bit more complicated, but my advisor has helped work this out."
