Vandals Fall to Montana after Slow Start

MOSCOW, Idaho - The third-ranked Idaho Vandals were put into a position they have not been in all season, playing from behind. No. 16 Montana jumped out to a 20-0 first-half lead and a late comeback came up short as the Vandals fell to Montana 23-21 in the Battle of the Little Brown Stein.

Montana took nearly six minutes off the clock in an 11-play 49-yard drive that ended in a field goal and a 3-0 Montana lead. The Griz then did something that no other team has done this season, stopped the Vandals on the opening drive, forcing a punt after a low snap on third down.

The Grizzlies scored touchdowns on back-to-back possessions before adding a field goal with 2:12 left in the second quarter.

Idaho got on the scoreboard with a quick 75-yard touchdown drive late in the second quarter. It was capped with an 11-yard Anthony Woods touchdown run, but the Vandals trailed 20-7 at the half, the first halftime deficit of the season for Idaho.

Neither team could find any traction in the third quarter, an opening Idaho drive was intercepted in the end zone by Montana, but the Vandal defense kept the Grizzlies off the scoreboard and the two teams entered the fourth still at 20-7.

Montana extended the lead to 23-7 with a 11:43 left in the game. Idaho battled back with a 15-play 75-yard drive capped with a 19-yard Hayden Hatten touchdown with 5:48 to play.Gevani McCoy found Hatten for a two-point conversion, cutting the lead at 23-15.

The Vandals forced a quick Montana three-and-out and drove the field where McCoy found Hatten for a 23-yard touchdown with 1:47 to play, the 28th of his career, breaking Jerry Hendren's career receiving touchdown record that has stood since 1968.

The ensuing two-point try failed and an onside kick attempt appeared to be successful, but the Vandals were called offsides.

The Vandals forced a four-and-out and got the ball back with 52 seconds remaining, but fumbled the ball on the ensuing play and Montana recovered the ball before ending the game in victory formation.

Hatten caught 11 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. McCoy was 26-37 for 336 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted twice, both on deflected balls and was sacked six times.
