MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho volleyball team dropped a home contest to Eastern Washington, 18-25, 25-17, 18-25, 20-25 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gym.
Freshman
Zuzanna Wieczorek recorded one of her best performances in an Idaho uniform with a career-high 13 kills, six digs and one block. Defensively,
Aine Doty led the team with 13 digs while
Emma Patterson pitched in a team-high two blocks.
The Vandals fell in the opening set 25-17. Idaho started with a 3-1 run before Eastern scored the next nine points to grab a commanding 10-3 lead. Idaho pulled within four but that would be the closest they would come as EWU went up 1-0. The Eagles controlled the set at the service line, posting six aces.
Idaho got back on track in the second with a 25-17 win to even it at 1-1. The Vandals turned it around on the offensive end in the second frame, posting 13 kills, three service aces and recording an impressive .400 hitting percentage. Five Vandals tallied a kill while Wieczorek led with five of her own.
Eastern Washington won the third set 25-18. Idaho was unable to follow up a highly efficient second set, as they posted a .045 hitting percentage on 12 kills and 10 errors. Idaho trailed by as many as eight points (12-4) early on before making a comeback to bring the score to 14-12. EWU scored the next six points to make it an eight-point game again as the Vandals couldn't complete the comeback.
Idaho dropped the match with a fourth-set loss, 25-20. The Eagles issued another large lead early on, holding an 11-4 advantage. The Vandals responded with a pair of 4-0 runs to make it a one-point game (19-18) before Eastern used a four-point spurt of their own to close the door on an Idaho comeback.
The Vandals continue their homestand next week with a pair of contests against in-state rival Idaho State (Oct. 26) and Weber State (Oct. 28) at Memorial Gym.
