SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Vandals are back in the win column after splitting the weekend on the road. Idaho defeated Sacramento State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Vandals are now 2-2-1 in conference and 6-2 on the road.
Jadyn Hanks scored the lone goal during the match, marking her fifth of the season. She leads the team in goals and points (11). Kira Witte picked up her fifth shutout of the season recording five saves, with two crucial ones in the second half. The Vandals out-shot the Hornets 16-14, firing off 12 in the first half.
For the seventh time this season, the Vandals finished the first half tied 0-0 with their opponent. Annika Farley had the best opportunities minutes into the game with a header that bounced off the crossbar and a saved penalty kick. The Hornets also had an opportunity denied by the crossbar in the first 45 minutes.
Idaho had the majority of possession but were lacking quality chances on goal until Alyssa Peters forced a turnover in the second half. Peters stripped the Hornet midfield of the ball and found Karli Yoshida-Williams in the center. Yoshida-Williams slid in the perfect pass into Hanks' stride. Like many times before this season, Hanks shot the ball one touch past the keeper.
The Hornets fought back trying to find the equalizer, creating eight corner kick opportunities in the second half. The Vandal defense and Witte stood strong and denied chance after chance earning the clean sheet.
Idaho sits tied for fourth in the Big Sky with seven points. The Vandals look to pick up three crucial points this weekend for their last road game at Eastern Washington on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
