MOSCOW, Idaho – The Vandals fell in three at home against Northern Colorado, 21-25, 22-25, 15-25, on Friday night at Memorial Gym.
Taryn Veirling led the Vandals on the offensive end with 11 kills while both
Natalia Wielgus and
Lacy Cox each recorded eight assists. Defensively,
Aine Doty had 15 digs while
Lauryn Arnold posted two blocks.
Northern Colorado took the first set, 25-21. Taryn Veirling led the way offensively for the Vandals with five kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Idaho took an early lead scoring the first four points of the set, but the Bears quickly rallied back with a 6-0 run of their own. Later in the set, Northern Colorado used a 6-2 spurt to go up 17-11 and that proved to be a lead that the Vandals couldn't come back from.
Idaho dropped the second set, 25-22. The Vandals were unable to get it going offensively in the second, posting nine kills on a .083 hitting percentage. Defensively, the Vandals posted five of their six blocks in the set, led by Arnold with two. The Silver and Gold delivered another strong opening to the set, building a 7-4 advantage but it was again UNC that answered with a comeback and significant run that decided the outcome. With the score tied at 12 all, Northern Colorado used an 8-3 run to build a 20-15 advantage. Similar to the first, Idaho tried to cut into the lead late scoring six of the next eight points but the Bears used a 3-1 run to close out the set.
The Bears won the match in the third, 25-15. Idaho allowed Northern Colorado to hit .321 and post 13 kills and three aces.
The Vandals compete in their final home game of the season tomorrow, hosting Northern Arizona at 12 p.m. for Senior Day. Idaho will honor its lone senior,
Renata Lopez Morales.
