Layne's Six TDs Leads Idaho Past Idaho State 63-21

MOSCOW, Idaho - Jack Layne tied a school record with six touchdown passes and Jermaine Jackson, Anthony Woods and Hayden Hatten all scored two touchdowns as Idaho jumped out to a 56-0 first-half lead and coasted to a 63-21 win, Saturday at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.

The win moves Idaho to 8-3 on the year and 6-2 in Big Sky Conference play, putting Idaho in a tie with Montana State for second place in the final Big Sky standings. 

Layne, making his second-career start both against Idaho State, went 20-26 for 275 yards and six TDs, matching Mason Petrino's school-record from the Vandals' 2018 60-53 overtime win over NAU. 

Idaho opened with a seven-yard Woods touchdown run on the opening drive and held Idaho State to just 48 yards in the first quarter while racking up 207 of their own. Hayden Hatten added a 24-yard TD with 6:07 left in the first, Jordan Dwyer added a 45-yard touchdown with 3:06 left in the first quarter and Jermaine Jackson returned an ISU punt 79 yards for his first touchdown of the game with 1:42 left in the first quarter. 

Idaho kept pouring it on in the second. Layne found Jake Cox for a three-yard TD pass with 14:23 to play in the half. Layne added a 15-yard TD throw to Jackson with 12:12 on the clock, 13-yard TD throw to Woods with 8:38 to play in the second and a 10-yard TD strike to Hatten with 3:04 to play in half to cap the scoring at a school-record 56 points in the half. 

Idaho State got on the board with 6:14 to play in the third and added a touchdown with 10:34 in the fourth. 

True freshman Jack Wagner found Jack Schuster for a 18-yard touchdown with 8:02 to play, career first touchdowns for both to close out the Vandal scoring.

Idaho State added a score with 4:40 to play to finish off the scoring at 63-21. 

The Vandal defense held Idaho State, the best passing team in the FCS, to just 64 passing yards in the first half and grabbed four interceptions overall. Dwayne McDougle grabbed two, Ormanie Arnold added one and another by Kyrin Beachem. Idaho racked up four sacks, one each from Tre Thomas, Jahkari Larmond, Ben Bertram and Sam Brown. 

Idaho outgained ISU 579 to 304, including 263 yards on the ground. Woods rushed 18 times for 115 yards to lead the ground attack. Dwyer had three catches for 100 yards to lead the receivers. 

Layne was 20-26 for 275 and six TDs. Wagner was 4-5 for 41 yards, a touchdown and an interception in his first-ever game action. 

Thomas and Xe'Ree Alexander led Idaho with eight tackles each.

The Vandals find out their playoff fate Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. on ESPNU for the FCS Playoff selection show. At 8-3, with only two FCS losses, by a combined four points, the Vandals look to be in seed contention with a chance for a bye in the first week of the playoffs.
