PORTLAND – The Idaho volleyball team fell to Portland State in four sets, 11-25, 21-25, 25-19, 18-25, on Thursday night at the Viking Pavilion.
Idaho was led by
Taryn Vrieling with 15 kills and
Taylor Brickey with 10 kills. Defensively, libero
Aine Doty posted a team-high 24 digs while middle blocker
Renata Lopez Morales posted seven stuffs. The Vandals recorded a season-high 11 aces, including four each from
Zuzanna Wieczorek and Lopez Morales.
The first set went to Portland State, 25-11. Idaho was unable to break through on the offensive end, posting seven kills, five errors and a .061 hitting percentage. PSU jumped out to a 7-0 advantage to open the frame and ended the set on a 7-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.
Idaho fell behind 2-0 after a 25-21 loss in the second. Vrieling tallied six kills and Brickey added four kills but the Vikings held Idaho to a .171 hitting percentage. The Vandals saw their largest lead midway through the frame with a 13-10 advantage after recording four of the last five points. PSU pulled back to even the score at 21-21 later in the set and ultimately used a 4-0 spurt to outlast Idaho.
The Vandals responded in the third with a 25-19 victory. The Vandals took advantage at the service line and at the net, recording seven aces and nine blocks. Wieczorek recorded three of her four aces in the set and
Ceren Sert added three blocks to lead Idaho on the defensive end.
The Vandals lost the match in the fourth by way of a 25-18 score. PSU posted four blocks to hold Idaho to its lowest hitting percentage of the match (.026). Brickey and Vrieling each recorded a set-high three kills.
Idaho wraps up its road trip in California with a matchup against Sacramento State on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
