Late Three Hands Idaho Tough Loss to Denver

MOSCOW, Idaho - A late three helps Denver (5-3) prevail over Idaho (3-4), 67-65 on Wednesday night after a hard-fought battle in the ICCU Arena.

The Vandals missed on the front end of a one-and-one and the Pioneers took advantage on the other end, hitting a three-pointer from the corner to help secure the victory.

Four Vandals scored in double digits, including D'Angelo Minnis who led the offense with 15 points and seven assists. Minnis shot 6-14 from the field and 3-7 from three. Trevon Blassingame contributed an all-around effort off the bench, totaling 14 points, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals. The sophomore from Auburn, Washington shot 5-of-9 from the field and hit four shots from behind the arc. Julius Mims posted a double-double for the second straight game with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Quinn Denker added 10 points to round out the scoring.

The Pioneers got off to a hot start to begin the game, going on a 14-4 run in the first four minutes of the action. Denver extended its lead later in the period to 21-9 before the Vandals started to find a rhythm offensively, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to make it a three-point game (20-23) with 8:33 remaining in the first.

The Vandals and Pioneers traded baskets for the next four minutes before Idaho broke through with eight straight points from Blassingame to take a 34-31 lead with 1:58 to go. Blassingame knocked down his second and third three-point make of the half and a layup in the lane to give the Vandals their first lead. Idaho went into the locker room up 34-32.

Terren Frank jump-started the second half with a putback layup to start a series of three straight-made baskets to put the Vandals up 41-35. The momentum continued as Idaho tacked on an 8-1 run powered by a three each from Kyson Rose and Tyler Linhardt and a pullup jumper from Minnis.

Denver hung around to eventually make it a one-point game (59-60) after a three from Tommy Bruner with under three minutes to go. Bruno retook the lead for the Pioneers on the next offensive trip down, but Rose was quick to respond with a layup on the other end with two minutes left to play.

Denker answered with a three-pointer from the perimeter to retake a 65-64 Idaho lead after Denver hit a three on the previous possession. It wasn't enough though as the Pioneers made one more play to upend the Vandals.

Idaho held the edge on points off turnovers, scoring 12 to Denver's eight. The key to the game was on the offensive glass, as the Pioneers secured 12 offensive rebounds to score 15 second-chance points.
