Idaho Cross Country Prepared for West Regionals in California

MOSCOW, Idaho - The Idaho Cross Country teams continue their postseason action traveling to the 2023 NCAA Division I West Regional this Friday, Nov. 10th, hosted by Sacramento State.

The races are set to get underway beginning with the women's 6K at 10 a.m. followed by the men's 8K at 11 a.m. PST. Both races are located at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif.

Both Vandal squads come off of a week's rest after the Big Sky Championships in Missoula, Montana. The men and the women earned fourth place finishes out of the 10 team slates. Nationally ranked No. 1 Northern Arizona swept both races.

Katja Pattis shone with an eighth-place finish for the Vandals in just her third race of the 2023 cross-country season. With her top-ten finish, the former Big Sky Female Freshman of the Year earned her second career all-conference honor and helped the Idaho women take home fourth place in the 5K with 109 points. Sophomore Abigail Thomas was next for the Vandal women at 25th place (18:19.3) and Leah Holmgren was a spot behind in 26th at an 18:21.1 mark. Two more Vandals came in the top 30 with the two freshmen, Constanze Paoli and McKenna Kozeluh in 28th and 30th, respectively.

Four of the top five harriers for the Idaho men finished within four seconds of each other. Sam Fulbright led the way finishing 21st (25:02.2) followed simultaneously by Lorenz Herrmann in 22nd (25:02.8), Tim Stevens in 23rd (25:03.2), and Shea Mattson capturing 24th (25:05.4). Vandal newcomer Shane Gard finished 35th (25:30.2) and the Idaho men secured fourth place with 119 points.

The Vandal women finished 10th at last year's West Regionals in University Place, Wash. Former Vandal Kelsey Swenson led the women with an 11th place finish, just 1.9 seconds short from earning a spot in the national finals. The men finished 16th as Lorenz Herrmann crossed the tape first for the Vandals in 66th.
