MOSCOW, Idaho – Tonight was a tale of two halves as
Beyonce Bea scored 27 points en route to defeating Idaho State 60-54.
Tiana Johnson saw some action, putting up 11 points on the scoreboard and
Sydney Gandy had six assists for the Vandals.
Anticipation built as the Bengals scored first taking their only lead of the game. A lay-up by
Rosa Smith ignited the fire and the Vandals were hot the rest of the quarter. Johnson racked up eight points with three shots from the field. Idaho went on a 7-0 scoring run, leaving ISU scoreless for over two minutes. The Vandals shot 53% (8-15) in the first quarter, taking a 23-15 lead.
Idaho showed no mercy in the second quarter racking up 20 more points to the Bengals' seven. Vandals stayed hot, going on a 17-3 run gaining their largest lead of 21 points. Idaho dominated on defense, holding the Bengals scoreless for another two minutes.
Bea led the team in the first half scoring 16 points and recording six rebounds. Johnson and
Asha Phillips had eight points each, while Gandy had three assists apiece. Idaho 53.8% (14-26) from the field, 50% (7-14) from the arc, and 88.9% (8-9) from the line. Idaho State could not catch a break shooting only 29.6% (8-27) from the field, 25% (1-4) from the arc, and 50% (1-2) from the line.
In the third quarter, Idaho State came out fighting and had a 6-1 run right out of the gate. The Vandals struggled to find the net as the Bengals outshot Idaho 35% to 20%. Despite the scoring difficulties, Bea tallied her third three-pointer of the game, tying her career high. Idaho was able to fend off Idaho State with a score of 51-37 with one quarter to go.
The Bengals tried their hardest to get back in the game, but the Vandals held on for the final 10 minutes. Bea kept the Vandals ahead, scoring six of Idaho's nine points. The match ended in favor of Idaho, 60 -54.
The Vandals will host their final home game of the regular season Saturday, February 25 against Weber State. Tip-off is at 7 pm.
