BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho men's basketball team fell to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, 87-76, Saturday night at Idaho Central Arena in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament.
The loss concludes the 2022-23 season for the Vandals with a 10-22 overall record (4-14 BSC). Despite shooting just 1-7 from the field in the final 8 minutes, Northern Arizona knocked down 15 of their 16 free throws to fend off the Vandals and move on to the second round of the tournament to face No. 1 seed Eastern Washington.
Front-court teammates
Isaac Jones and
Nigel Burris led the scoring effort for the Vandals with a combined 44 points. Jones had a team-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field while Burris posted a career-high 21 points with a 7 for 10 shooting clip.
Idaho shot 51 percent (26-51) from the field, 39 percent (5-13) from three and 76 percent (19-25) from the foul line. UI shot 59 percent in the opening period before being held to 41 percent in the second period.
Northern Arizona jumped out to an early 12-6 lead but the Vandals surged with an 8-0 run taking a 14-12 lead. From there, NAU would retake the lead with a three by Oakland Fort and ultimately carry its advantage for the next 10 minutes of action before Idaho tied the score at 36-36 with 3:01 left in the half. Four lead changes transpired through the remainder of the period as the Lumberjacks carried a 45-42 lead into the break.
Jones boosted the Vandals with 12 first-half points on 6-9 shooting. Burris and
Divant'e Moffitt also contributed 10 points each.
Burris opened the second half with nine of Idaho's first 10 points in the first five minutes of action as Idaho took a 52-50 edge. Northern Arizona found some breathing room later in the period, taking an 11-point lead (73-62) with just under eight minutes to play. Idaho rallied to make it a two-point game (74-72) but that would be the closest the Vandals came as the Lumberjacks closed the game on a 9-1 run to secure an 87-76.
For the Lumberjacks, Jalen Cone led the way with a game-high 25 points on 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
