No. 7 Vandals Hand Sacramento St. First Big Sky Loss Since 2019

MOSCOW, Idaho – Ricardo Chavez hit a field goal with one second left to lift Idaho to the win over Sacramento State and end the Hornets' 19-game Big Sky win streak, dating back to 2019. Ormanie Arnold added a touchdown as time expired on a scoop and score during the ensuing kickoff, leading the Vandals to a 36-27 victory over the Hornets.

Idaho never trailed and kept their opening drive score streak alive with a field goal by Chavez from the 29-yard line. The Hornets responded, equalizing the game from 36 yards on the ensuing drive with 4:39 to play in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Anthony Woods earned the first touchdown of the day rushing two yards for his fourth touchdown of the season with 7:15 left in the half. The score was set up by a 28-yard circus catch by Jermaine Jackson, just one play earlier.

Chavez hit his Idaho career-long field goal of 50 with 1:26 left in the half, but Sacramento State scored a late touchdown to cut the lead to 13-10 at the break.

Idaho added to its lead early in the third quarter, forcing a Sac State three and out and scoring on the opening drive with a double-reverse pass from Nick Romano to Johnson back to McCoy and into the hands of Turon Ivy Jr. the 52-yard TD.

The Hornets responded on the next drive with a short touchdown, but Terez Traynor grabbed his first touchdown since 2021 after missing most of last season due to injury. The 60-yard reception from McCoy was the longest of his career, putting the Vandals up 27-17 at the end of the third quarter.

Sacramento State added a field goal early in the fourth and a touchdown to even the game at 27 points with just under five minutes to play. Jackson had an outstanding return and a Sacramento State penalty gave the Vandals the ball at the Hornet 49-yard line to start the drive.

Idaho drove to the Sacramento 13 before Chavez sent the ball through the uprights to take the lead with one second left on the clock. It was the first game-winner of Chavez' career.

In a failed last-ditch effort by the Hornets, a pitch was fumbled and Arnold picked up the loose ball and ran it in for his first-career touchdown as time expired, wrapping up the 36-27 win for the Vandals.

McCoy was 15-21 for 234 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He also ran for 32 yards. Woods, who missed most of the week of practice and was a game-time decision with an injury, ran for 117 yards and a touchdown. His second 100-yard game of the year.

Hayden Hatten led the offense with seven receptions for 72 yards, but four receivers had at least 38 yards receiving.

The Vandals held Sacramento State to just 69 rushing yards, the least by an FCS team since 2015 and sacked Hornet quarterback Kaiden Bennett twice. The dual-threat quarterback was held to -3 yards on the day after rushing for 100 yards or more in the last two games. Tommy McCormick had a team-high five tackles and Keyshawn James-Newby and freshman Dallas Afalava each recorded a sack. The Vandals broke up nine Sacramento St. passes.

The Vandals outgained the Hornets 412-305 with 178 rushing yards and 234 passing yards. Idaho defeated Sacramento State for the first time since 2017 ending their 12-game road streak and 22-game regular season win streak.
