MISSOULA, Mont. – Idaho conceded two early goals and failed to equalize, resulting in a 2-1 win for Montana over the Vandals on Thursday afternoon at South Campus Stadium.
The Lady Grizzlies (9-2-2, 3-0-0 in the Big Sky) struck first at 8:54 after Jen Estes dribbled past a Vandal defender in the box and fired the ball into the top left corner to beat the keeper.
The Vandals immediately responded 52 seconds later in the ninth minute off a corner kick.
Alyssa Peters lined it up and played it long to connect with
Annika Farley, who struck a header past the Lady Griz defense to even the score. It marked the first goal allowed by Montana in four games (9/8, Wyoming).
The goal was Farley's third on the season and second in as many games. Peters recorded her seventh assist this season and 26th in her career to narrow the Big Sky all-time career assist gap to only one (27).
With the score knotted at 1-1, Montana was quick to strike again for the go-ahead goal. In the 14th minute, Idaho's back line allowed Estes to make her way into scoring position as she directed a shot in the far left corner of the net to make it 2-1.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Idaho possessed an opportunity on the offensive end. Peters sent a corner kick into the box that found
Margo Schoesler and
Sienna Gonzales for a pair of shot attempts. Montana held strong and deflected the ball out, denying any further opportunities for the Vandals.
Flores had three saves for the Vandals while Gonzales and Schoesler each added two shots in the effort.
