MOSCOW, Idaho – The Vandal volleyball team fell in three sets to Eastern Washington, 15-25, 14-25, 10-25 on Friday night at Memorial Gym.
Madu Fontes led the way offensively for the Vandals with seven kills while
Taylor Brickey added five. Setters Natalia Wieglus and
Miya Carmichael each tallied 10 assists.
Weber State took the first set, 25-15. Idaho struggled to find rhythm causing them to start the set down 6-0. The Vandals posted nine kills and nine errors in the set. Eastern Washington went on another 6-0 surge midway way through to help go up 22-10 and create enough separation to win the frame.
Idaho dropped the second set, 25-14 giving Eastern Washington a 2-0 lead. The Black and Gold asserted momentum to open the set, scoring the first three points. EWU scored four straight points and another 6-0 run to go up 10-5. Idaho scored four of the next five points highlighted by back-to-back aces from Fontes to make it a two-point game (9-11). The Eagles broke away with a commanding 14-5 run to end the set. Idaho allowed the Eagles' attack to hit .367 and post 15 kills.
Eastern Washington swept the Vandals in the third with a 25-10 win. The Eagles began the set with a 13-1 spurt that helped build enough separation to fend off any sort of comeback. The Vandals attempted to recover but were not able to shrink the divide.
