LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Zoe Newell earned individual co-medalist honors and
Emma Kang finished tied for sixth to lead the Idaho Vandal women's golf team to a second-place finish at the BGSU Women's intercollegiate which wrapped up Wednesday at the Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
"I am really proud of the way our team came out and fought this week," head coach
Stephanie Young said. "We wanted to finish strong today and I am excited that the team was able to accomplish that goal and earn a runner-up team finish! We have been working hard this winter and we're very excited to get the spring season started."
Newell, a freshman from Oro Valley, Arizona, put up the highest finish of her career, her previous best were 17th-place finishes at the Eastern Washington Invitational and the Seattle U Harbottle Invitational in the fall.
She opened this week's tournament with an even-par 71 before following that up with a three-over 74 in round two. She closed with a two-over 73, finishing with a three-round score of 218. Abilene Christian's Delaney Martin tied Newell to force a playoff, but after three even holes, the playoff was called off because of travel arrangements.
Kang, another freshman, picked up her second top-10 finish of the season, to go with her 10th-place finish at the Eagle Invite. She closed with a third-round five-over 76, to finish at 10-over for the tournament.
Jenna Briggeman finished with a three-round total of 226 for a 12th-place finish, her second top-15 mark of the year.
Yvonne Vinceri finished 21-over 234 to end in a tie for 27th-place and Borum Jung finished 28-over (241) to come in at 45th-place.
Emma Heyman, golfing as an individual, finished 22-over (235) to finish in a tie for 31st.
"
Zoe Newell led the way for us and congrats to her on her first collegiate win," Young said. "A special shout-out to
Emma Kang and
Jenna Bruggeman on their strong finishes. We continue to see valuable rounds from our whole team each event this season and look forward to working hard and preparing for our next events in just two weeks."
The tournament is the second top-two finish this season for the Vandals this year, along with the team title at the Eagle Invitational, but more importantly, it comes on the course that will host the Big Sky Conference Championship.
As a team, Idaho struggled to start the first round, but closed the round strong before putting up their best round in the second and closing the tournament with the best team score of the field for the third round.
The Vandals have a week off before returning to Arizona for the Grand Canyon University Invite on Feb. 27-28.
