SAN DIEGO – Idaho men's tennis took San Diego State to the wire, but fell by a score of 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center.

Matteo Masala, Sebastian Medica and Alejandro Salvador registered singles wins for the Vandals (0-3). San Diego State's Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice clinched the match, with help from Bora Sengul, Robin Parts and the doubles unit. 

The Vandals put together competitive efforts on all three courts in doubles. SDSU started off by earning a 7-5 win at No. 2 before a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreak on court one. The Vandal pair of Alex Asenov and Medica battled their way to match point but allowed the Aztecs to complete the comeback. Matteo Masala and Yu-Shun Lai led 6-5 on court three before going unfinished. 

SDSU earned singles wins at the No. 6 and No. 3 positions to take a commanding 3-0 advantage. 

Medica followed with a statement in his first-ever appearance at No. 1 for Idaho, topping Johannes Seeman in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. The effort results in the first career singles win for Medica as a Vandal. 

Mario Duron and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice battled at No. 4 to a deciding third set. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice opened with a 6-1 win in the first before Duron came back with a 6-2 decision in the second. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice won 6-0 to record the clinch.

Courts two and five finished out their matches, with both victors being Vandals. Salvador added a win over Alexander Mandma, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot before Masala closed it out with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4) result against Chikaya Sato at No. 2. Both singles victories were the seasons first for Masala and Salvador. 

Idaho returns to action Sunday, Feb. 18, when it visits UC San Diego for an 11 a.m. PST first serve at the Northview Tennis Courts.
