Idaho Women’s Tennis Wins Third Straight with 5-2 Victory Over Weber State

Naomi Schraeder battled to a straight set win at No. 6 to clinch the match for Idaho.

OGDEN, Utah – Idaho women's tennis put together another strong performance to capture its third consecutive victory with a 5-2 win over Weber State on Friday morning at the Ogden Athletic Club.

The Vandals (9-5) have now won six of their last eight matches and improve to 3-1 in Big Sky play. Meanwhile, the Wildcats fall to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Idaho got off to a strong start right out of the gate, earning wins in two out of three doubles matches. Lena Beckx and Rachelle Starreveld continued to shine on court three, as the pair moved to 10-3 overall after a 6-3 win over Jessica Hill and Kenadee Semenik.

At court two, Ida Johansson and Saffron Dowse claimed a 6-4 victory over Dylan Lolofie and Sicely Ferreira to make it 1-0 Idaho.

Weber State responded by earning a straight-set win on court one to even the score at 1-1.

Idaho went up 2-1 on the Wildcats thanks to a 6-4, 7-6, win by Johansson at flight four. The freshman from Sweden moves to 8-4 on the season and 3-1 in conference matches.

From there, the Vandals jumped out in front 3-1 after Valentina Rodas defeated Ferreira in three sets. Rodas won comfortably by a score of 6-1 in the first and third set while Ferreira earned a 7-6 win in the second.

However, Weber State would make things interesting. The Wildcats won on court two in three sets to cut the Vandal lead to 3-2.

Naomi Schraeder silenced any kind of comeback bid for Weber and delivered a match-clinching victory over Li Yang Ping An at the No. 6 position. Schraeder opened with a 7-5 result in the first before earning a 7-6 decider in the second to improve to 10-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 against Big Sky opponents.

With pressure relieved, Diana Khaydarshina would go on to finish the job on court three. The freshman persevered past Lolofie, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1.
