PORTLAND – The Idaho men's tennis team took two out of three doubles matches and four singles courts to earn a 5-2 win over Portland State on Monday afternoon.
The singles surge was led by the bottom half of the lineup and doubles was controlled by victories on courts two and three.
Duo
Francisco Gay and
Taiyo Kurata opened with a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak victory at No. 2 before
Alejandro Salvador and
Matteo Masala clinched with a 6-4 win at No. 3 to make it 1-0 Idaho.
Salvador made a return to the singles lineup for the first time in a month and pulled through for a victory at No. 6. He delivered a shutout win over Hayden Elliott, 6-0, 6-0.
Mario Duron followed in the No. 4 spot with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hembo Mathiasen.
Sebastian Medica earned his first career clinch at the No. 5 spot, earning a 6-4, 6-3 result over Andrin Zuellig to help move Idaho to 5-12 overall and 3-3 in Big Sky play.
Masala tacked on an insurance point to close action. The Italian issued a three-set win over Andrea Brignacca at No. 3. The two split set one and two before Masala was crowned the winner in an 11-9 tiebreak.
The Vandals finish out home competition on Friday, April 12 with a matchup against Sacramento State in Lewiston. First serve gets underway at 4 p.m.
