FARMINGTON, Utah (Aug. 6, 2024) – The Big Sky Conference office has announced its 2023-24 Team Academic Champions for the second time in league history, highlighting the top team academically in each sport the league sponsors. The Vandals tied Weber State for the conference-lead with four teams earning the title.
Men's cross country led the Vandals with a team GPA of 3.80 followed by men's golf with a GPA of 3.68. Women's basketball shares the title with Northern Arizona, achieving a team GPA of 3.63. The men's track and field team rounded out the awards with a final GPA of 3.61.
"I continue to be so impressed with the academic success of our student-athletes," said Terry Gawlik, Director of Athletics. "Competing in their respective sports at the University of Idaho at the Division I level and balancing academia is difficult, but our coaches and student-athletes have found a way to be highly successful in both."
These titles were based on combined team GPA for the entire 2022-23 academic calendar, not just the season they competed in. Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field were combined for the purposes of these titles.
"Much like performance on the playing surface, strong teamwork is also key to being successful in the classroom," Commissioner Tom Wistrcill said. "Here at the conference office we've enjoyed highlighting these teams over the past couple years and congratulate all of our Team Academic Champions for setting a high bar not only across our league, but the entire country."
