Fourth-Ranked Vandals Survive ACU Comeback Bid, Win 27-24

ABILENE, Texas – Zach Krotzer forced a fumble with just seconds on the clock to help fourth-ranked Idaho hold off No. 19 Abilene Christian and close out a 27-24 win Saturday night at Wildcats Stadium in Abilene.

The Vandals dominated the first half of the game, scoring a pair of first quarter touchdowns on passes from Jack Wagner.

Wagner found Jordan Dwyer for a 22-yard touchdown on the first drive. Kyrin Beachem intercepted ACU's Maverick McIvor, the first he has thrown this season. The interception set up another Wagner touchdown pass, this time to Mark Hamper on a 44-yard trick play score with 3:00 left in the first quarter to put Idaho up 14-0.

ACU scored a field goal to cut the lead to 14-3 in the second before Idaho hit back-to-back field goals in the final few minutes of the half to take a 20-3 lead into the break.

The Vandals drove the field on the opening drive of the second half and scored on 3-yard rush by Nate Thomas, his fourth of the season. The score put Idaho up 27-3

Tommy McCormick intercepted an ACU pass in the red zone for his second interception in as many games, but the Wildcats responded, scoring 21 unanswered points.

ACU forced an Idaho punt and took over possession with 57 seconds left. The Wildcats drove into Idaho territory before Krotzer forced McIvor to fumble on a QB run. True freshman Matt Irwin jumped on the ball to collect the win.

Idaho racked up 424 yards of offense led by Wagner who was 18-35 for a career high 253 yards and two touchdowns. Dwyer caught five passes for 91 yards and a touchdown while three Vandal rushers combined for 171 yards on the ground.

The Idaho defense gave up 393 yards but forced three turnovers in the win.

The win moves the Vandals to 3-1 on the year, including a pair of ranked wins and a win over Wyoming.

Idaho is back in action on the road against UC Davis, in what will be a third consecutive ranked opponent for the Vandals.
