MOSCOW, Idaho – Five Vandals scored in double figures as the Vandals women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games after defeating Montana 70-57 on Monday afternoon at ICCU Arena in Moscow.
The Vandals were hot off the jump hitting five of their first six shots to build a14-0 lead over the Lady Griz. Montana finally got on the board with a three-pointer with 4:42 remaining in the first quarter and chipped away to cut the lead to 20-11 at end of the first.
Montana closed the lead to 22-18 in the middle of the second quarter before Idaho extended the lead to 35-25 at the half.
The two teams played a back-and-forth third quarter until Idaho broke away on a seven-point run that featured a three-pointer from sophomore
Hope Hassmann. The Vandals were able to keep a double-digit lead to end the third quarter 59-46.
Idaho extended the lead to 70-52 with 3:00 remaining in the game before the Grizzlies hit a pair of shots in the final minute of the game to cut the lead to the final margin.
Olivia Nelson led the Vandals for the third consecutive game with 15 points, Hassmann tallied 13 points and a career-high nine assists.
Rosie Schweizer and
Jennifer Aadland added 10 points each and
Sarah Brans scored 11 points.
Idaho held Montana to 20-71 (28.2%) from the field and 7-29 (24.1%) from the three-point line while hitting 26-56 (46.4%) from the field and 8-20 (40%) from the three-point line.
It is the first season sweep of Montana since 2016-17.
The win is the fifth in a row for Idaho who is now 8-1 at ICCU Arena this season. The Vandals are now 13-4 overall and 5-1 in Big Sky play, moving the Vandals into a tie for second place in the Big Sky standings with NAU.
Following this win, Idaho will hit the road to take on Northern Colorado on Thursday at 6 p.m. Pacific.
