Moscow, ID - Idaho Men's Basketball (9-11, 4-3 BSC) fought through a tumultuous game down to the wire against the University of Northern Colorado for a 77-76 win in the last seconds of regulation.
The Vandals opened strong with the first points of the game but had to battle against the Bears who came out with a ton of offensive energy leaving the Vandals trailing 26-36 at the half.
The Bears led 35:27 of the 40-minute game, but Idaho came into the second half like no other putting up 51 of the 77 points while shooting 91.3% from the free-throw line going 21-23 combined a 12-2 run from the Vandals bringing them within three points, 49-52, of the Bears at 10:00.
With Northern Colorado making a last second layup to go up by two with 3.7 seconds left on the clock,
Kolton Mitchell took the inbound pass from
Jack Payne, weaved down the court and uncorked a last-second heave through two navy blue shirts. The shot was true from at least 24' as the final buzzer sounded and the Idaho faithful went wild, celebrating as their Vandals handed UNC their first conference loss of the year and first overall in over a month.
The Vandals' offense was led by
Mitchell who had a night, with a game-high 25 points, shooting 5-9 beyond the arc and hitting the game-winning buzzer-beater.
Tyler Lindhardt dropped a season-high 17 points while
Julius Mims tallied 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Kyson Rose also got to work against the Bears, putting up 6 off the bench to hit the milestone 1000 points scored in his storied career.
After pouring every ounce the Vandals had, the hard work paid off defeating the once-conference leaders.
The Vandals look to carry this momentum against Northern Arizona University this Saturday, back in the ICCU Arena, at 12PM PST.
