NOTABLES
  • Jackson Rasmussen led the Vandals in scoring with a career high 23, going 6-10 from the floor and 10-12 from the free throw line.
    • After three games, Rasmussen is the team's leading scorer at 18.0 PPG
    • Rasmussen's 23 points are the most by an Idaho true freshman since Cameron Tyson scored 27 against Weber State in December 2018
  • For the third game in as many opportunities, Idaho had at least four players finish in double figures.
    • Had six each vs. WSU and Whitman
  • The Vandals made seven threes in San Diego, extending the program's streak of 5+ to 49 straight games.
  • Kolton Mitchell matched his season high with six assists.
    • Averaging 5.3 APG after Wednesday, the fourth-highest mark in the Big Sky
  • Lowest attended game, home or away, this season (456).
    • 3,588 at WSU, 2,295 vs. Whitman
  • Despite a small sample size, Kolton Mitchell was perfect (2-2) from the free-throw line and, combined with a flawless 8-8 vs. Whitman, has made his last ten straight.
  • Idaho has out-rebounded its opponent in all three games this season.
    • 40 grabs vs. USD is the most this season vs. a DI opponent.

SAN DIEGO- In Idaho's first true road game of the season, the Vandals had a tough night shooting as they fell to San Diego for their first loss, 74-78.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Idaho struggled out of the gate, falling behind 8-2 by the first TV timeout. The Vandals picked it up after the stoppage, with Jack Payne and Jackson Rasmussen converting back-to-back jumpers, pulling UI within one.

Following his floater, Rasmussen scored on two more possessions to give Idaho its only lead of the game after earning an and-one opportunity. The freshman led the Vandals in scoring for the second game this season, this time with a career-high 23, going 10 for 12 from the charity stripe.

San Diego went on a 28-16 run from that point to close the half, shooting a lights-out 7-10 from three in the final 13:30 of the first.

The Black and Gold kicked off the second period on a 12-2 run of their own to cut the difference to one. Payne almost singlehandedly fueled the run, scoring eight in a span of 2:44, including massive back-to-back threes.

The middle part of the period would be spent trading buckets, with USD continuing its hot streak from deep. A San Diego technical set up one of the most entertaining sequences of the night for the Vandals; a four-shot possession with Rasmussen cashing in for three following three straight offensive boards for Idaho.

The domination of the glass was a game-long theme for the Vandals, with Idaho winning the rebounding battle for the third straight game and doubling up the Toreros on the offensive end, 19-8.

Idaho fought to tie the game at 71 with just over two minutes remaining, but could not get any closer, falling 74-78.
