UNIVERSITY PLACE, WASH. – The Idaho Vandal men's golf team finished sixth out of 18 teams at the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational, at the legendary Chambers Bay Course. The Vandals were led by Sam Johnson's fifth-place finish, his second top 10 finish in three weeks.
 
Johnson was one-under for the tournament, going three under in the last two rounds on the difficult course to lead the way for the Vandals. He recorded 13 birdies in the tournament, including a birdie on hole number one for all three days.
 
"I'm very excited for Sam," head coach David Nuhn said. "A top five finish and his second top eight finish in the last three tournaments. I've seen his efforts in practice start paying off and his confidence in that process is growing. Also, a nice showing for Senior Matt McGann, tying for 19th. Top 20s are valuable for team success."
 
Senior Matt McGann was four-over to earn a 19th-place finish highlighted by his first-round even-par 71. Joe Sykes was six-over to finish 31st. Josh McCartain was nine-over to finish 49th, Dalton Dean was 11-over to finish 59th.
 
Tommy Kimmel, golfing as an individual, was 10-over to finish 53rd.
 
"I'm very pleased with the way our team performed this week at Chambers Bay," Nuhn said. "It's been a place the Vandals have been comfortable for the last few years. Tee to green we were much sharper. The guys had worked hard coming home from Eugene to get that ball striking dialed in. I think moving forward we will address some short game needs looking towards Boise and the Battle for Idaho."
 
The Vandals now prepare for the Battle for Idaho against Boise State at the Hillcrest Country Club in Boise, home of the Albertsons Boise Open on the Korn Ferry Tour.
