QUOTABLES
"Championship teams find ways to win ugly games. That's what playing on the road in the Big Sky looks like. And that's exactly what we did. Our defense and rebounding willed us to win this game. I'm really proud of our effort tonight." –
Arthur Moreira
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Idaho Vandals Women's Basketball team (14-5, 5-1) scrapped its way to a 62-55 win on the road against the Sacramento State Hornets (9-10, 3-3).
It was a tough first quarter for both teams, as neither was able to find an offensive rhythm. The Hornets escaped the first with a 12-11 lead over the Vandals.
The second quarter set the tone for the rest of the match for the Vandals. Idaho hit three triples, one each from
Kyra Gardner,
Hope Hassmann, and
Ella Uriarte, that helped propel Idaho to an 18-point quarter. The mighty Vandal defense stifled the Hornet attack, holding it to just eight points in the second. Idaho led 29-20 as the teams went to the locker rooms.
Lorena Barbosa paced the Vandal offense to start the quarter. The talented Brazilian made a jumper in the paint for the first Vandal points of the third, then followed that up with a bucket through the contact.
Ana Pinheiro and Uriarte connected on back-to-back baskets to expand the Vandal advantage to 13. The Hornets chipped away, slashing their deficit to eight points, but a Debora Dos Santos buzzer-beating layup put Idaho up by 10 going to the final quarter.
Sacramento State went on a 7-0 run, culminating with a layup that cut Idaho's lead to just three points, but a Uriarte layup put that run to an end. In the waning moments of the game, the Vandals went to the charity stripe following several Sacramento State fouls, ultimately carrying Idaho to a 62-55 win.
