MOSCOW, Idaho - University of Idaho volleyball coach Debbie Buchanan announced the signing of Sarah Meek for the 2001 season. Meek, a middle blocker from Sherwood Park, is one of the top players from Alberta.
"Sarah is aggressive on the court, but very smooth and agile," Buchanan said. "Despite limited playing experience, she already plays at a very high level and has become one of the best players in her province."
Meek has been playing for just two years in high school and one year in club, but already has garnered a number of honors. She led her Azzure club team to the Alberta championship where she was named to the all-tournament team. She also helped Salisbury High School to the provincial title where she was an all-tournament selection.
Meek has been selected to play in the Canada Games, which will be held in August. She will be a member of the Alberta team as it competes in the quadrennial all-star competition.
"At 6-1, Sarah really will add a presence for us," Buchanan said. "She has all of the physical tools to be a great collegiate player."
Meek is a basketball standout in addition to competing in track and soccer for SHS. She earned all-city basketball honors last season as the Sabres' team captain. Meek was an all-tournament selection when she led Salisbury basketball to a third-place finish in Alberta.
Meek joins Laura McCaffrey in the Vandals' 2001 recruiting class. McCaffrey, who signed during the early period, is from Ft. Collins, Colo., where she was an all-state pick in high school and an all-region pick in club competition. The late signing period continues until Aug. 1.
