EDMONTON, Alberta - Vandal hurdler Angela Whyte won the 100-meter hurdles at the 2001 Canadian National Championships, June 23.
Whyte, an Edmonton native, competed in front of a hometown crowd, which included her brother and father. In front of family and friends, Whyte crossed the finish line in 13.10 seconds to claim the title of Canadian national champion.
"My dad and brother hadn't seen me run for at least two years," Whyte said. "What more can you ask for?"
Unfortunately, Whyte hasn't officially run the A standard of 13.05 and her status for the World Championships in Edmonton is still in doubt.
A deadline of July 23 has been set for athletes to meet qualifying standards or to file appeals to the national selection committee.
"I'll take my results and tell them, 'I can do this, whatever you need," Whyte said. "A sub-13? I can do it."
