Women's tennis takes first conference win

BOISE, IDAHO - The University of Idaho women's tennis team finished off its weekend by beating conference foe Cal State Northridge, 4-2.

"The girls played smart," tennis coach Karen Human said. They put it all together today and played how they were supposed to."

UI took the doubles point by winning at each spot. For No. 1 doubles, Sunel Nieuwoudt and Jessica Hubbard defeated Ana Matijasevic and YuYu Myinttun, 9-8. Kareen Konishi and Patricia Ruman shut out Brittany Bierman and Olga Yepremian, 8-0. Monica Martin and Mariel Tinnirello kept Kasia Krasinkska and Sonya Kumar at bay, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot.

The Vandals took wins at the No.1, 3, 5 and 6 spots. At the No. 3 spot, the match was very close as Hubbard and Northridge's Brittany Bierman battled it out and Hubbard pulled off the match with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 3-3, (7-3). Nieuwoudt's first set against Matijasevic was close, 7-5, but Nieuwoudt came back fierce in the second shutting Matijasevic out, 6-0.

The Lady Vandals compete again Feb. 23 as they head back to LCSC.
