Vandals can't stop No. 60 Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBIPSO, Calif. - The University of Idaho women's tennis team stepped on to Cal Poly's courts and played hard but fell to the No. 60 Mustangs, 5-2.

"I'm very pleased with the whole team's performance," tennis coach Karen Human said. "It's definitely pleasing to know we were right there with the 2002 conference champs."

In doubles, the Mustangs easily took the matches from the No. 1 to No. 3 spots putting them one point up.

In singles, the Vandals earned the points at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Sunel Nieuwoudt and Jessica Hubbard both had their matches go to three very close sets and both pulled off the wins. Nieuwoudt's match versus Samantha Waller ended with a final score of 4-6, 7-5, (10-6). Hubbard's final score against Chelsy Thompson came to 6-3, 4-6, (10-4)

"Sunel and Jessica played out of their minds," Human said.

However, the Mustangs took the matches at the No. 3 through 6 spots to secure the victory.

"Our progression is going really well right now and we'll be peaking at conference."

The Vandals finish up their California tour by heading to Fresno to take on No. 10 Cal State Fresno, 1:30 p.m., Friday.
