MOSCOW, Idaho - The Idaho men's basketball team played so well Thursday at the Cowan Spectrum, the game seemed out of reach for Cal Poly during the last 37 minutes of the game. The Vandals out-shot, out-rebounded and out-defended Mustangs in an impressive 84-67 conference win.
For the second time in two Big West games, nearly everything seemed to go right for the Vandals (4-9, 2-0), who jumped to an 11-0 lead against the Mustangs (3-7, 1-3) and never looked back.
"We were certainly able to get the defensive stops we needed to start the game right," head coach Leonard Perry said. "We got three stops in a row, and that was what we needed. That was our goal."
The hot-shooting Vandals built a 43-26 advantage by halftime and never allowed the margin to dip below 14 in the second half.
The Vandals had 20 assists. Perry said it was his team's best offensive performance of the season.
"Whoever's the strongest, quickest and fastest generally wins the game, and (the Vandals) were all three of those tonight," Cal Poly coach Kevin Bromley said.
Throughout the first half, forward Armend Kahrimanovic made a habit of finding - and making - open 3-point shots. He converted on five-of seven attempts, and one of his two misses was a shot clock-induced desperation shot. He tied for fourth on the Vandals' single-game 3-point single-game percentage list with 71-percent.
"I hit my first shot and got some confidence," Kahrimanovic said. "My team kept finding me. They were easy shots."
"It helps us out a lot," forward Dandrick Jones said. "If A.K. keeps making those, guys are going to start running at him, and that will loosen up their zone and create more shots for us."
Once again, Jones led the Vandals on both ends of the court. He finished with a game-high 25 points and had four assists.
"I thought he played an extremely unselfish game," Perry said.
Guard Mike Titchenal led Cal Poly with 16 points.
The Vandals held a .583-to-.329 advantage in field goal percentage and grabbed eight more rebounds.
